The Royal Observatory Greenwich is part of Royal Museums Greenwich, which also includes the National Maritime Museum, the Cutty Sark and the Queen's House art gallery.

The Science Learning & Public Engagement department at the Royal Observatory Greenwich (ROG) delivers a world-class offer exploring the science of astronomy and space exploration for schools and the public. The department is looking for enthusiastic individuals with extensive experience of using personal telescopes, excellent knowledge of astronomy and the night sky, and a strong talent for science communication to support this exciting programme.

Support Astronomers are critical to the delivery of our observing programmes, including public observing activity, the acquisition of telescope astrophotography images and other projects. As well as supporting telescope-based activity, post holders deliver planetarium shows to varied audiences. Work opportunities will usually be in the evenings, often after dark, or during the daytime at weekends. Those with availability in the daytime on weekdays will be offered a broader range of work.

Work opportunities will often be irregular, requiring a certain amount of flexibility and responsiveness within realistic limits. Work opportunities will usually be offered 1 month in advance, unless we are seeking emergency support

Terms and conditions:

Zero hours contract

Pay: £12.24 per hour plus holiday pay

Payment will be made on a monthly basis in arrears.

Work opportunities will be irregular and will typically be offered 1 month in advance. The post-holder will usually be required to support no more than 1 day of activity a week, and a minimum of 1 day of work a month, although our needs are extremely variable.

The post-holder will be required to work 3-6 hours on any given day. A significant amount of this work will take place after 18.00 or later. Daytime work will typically be delivered 10.00 and 18.00.
