ABOUT US
The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity.  We want to see a world where trees and woods thrive for people and nature. The Trust engages and inspires people to make their difference tackling the nature and climate crisis helping protect, restore and create our vital woods and trees.

THE ROLE
The Outreach Adviser for the Lost Woods of the Low Weald & Downs will play a fundamental role in the ‘Reviving of the Lost Woods project’ as well as playing a key role in the ‘Reconnecting the Lost Woods’ and ‘Volunteer Veteran Tree Recorders’ projects. The Lost Woods of the Low Weald and Downs programme led by the Woodland Trust, partnering with Action in rural Sussex, Small Woodland Association and Sussex Wildlife Trust aims to bring life back to the forgotten and fragmented ancient woods in Sussex. Working with our partners and the local community, we aim to transform the landscape to boost biodiversity and revitalise traditional woodland management.

The Outreach Adviser will be required to work with landowners, the wider outreach team and woodland creation team to identify opportunities for new wooded habitat and new or restored hedgerows, shaws and shelterbelts to facilitate better connections between the fragmented Lost Woods through natural colonisation or planting. The Outreach Adviser will provide ongoing support, often through collaboration with external consultants or partners, to help overcome barriers or inertia to woodland work or establishment, and to navigate forestry regulations.

THE CANDIDATE
You’ll have proven knowledge of woodland management & ancient woodland restoration. You will have experience working with landowners, contractors, and consultants. You will have the ability to influence and inspire landowners to gain skills and knowledge related to woodland management.

You’ll be results driven and innovative, comfortable in working remotely as part of a dispersed team and have a track record of effective project planning, budget management and delivery.

You’ll be an excellent communicator, self-motivated, and proactive and be able to build and nurture effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders in order to deliver on multiple projects and programmes.

The role is based in the Lost Woods of the Low Weald and Downs, and it is preferred the successful candidates be located within this area and be willing to travel. You will be required to use your own suitable car for travel.

WHAT TO EXPECT BY JOINING A TEAM AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE
There’s no other organisation like the Woodland Trust. Joining the team you will be making your contribution to tackling the nature and climate crisis. In return, we recognise and value our people. You'll have our full support, training and opportunities for professional development, along with a contributory pension, life assurance, good holiday allowance and the opportunity to work flexibly from home.

OUR COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
At the Woodland Trust, we want to reflect and represent the full richness of diversity in the UK. Fewer of our employees are Black, Asian or minority ethnic; disabled; from lower socio-economic backgrounds or under 25; so we are particularly keen to receive your application if you are from one or more of these groups. We can also discuss anything you may need to achieve your full potential at any stage of the process. We assess your application solely on your demonstrated suitability for the job. Nothing else.
