Do you want to make a real difference in a real place, for nature and people?  Could you use your policy and advocacy skills to drive the best possible outcomes for nature? Do you have the partnership skills to build a robust coalition of like-minded organisations? And do you have the campaigning skills to equip local communities to show politicians how much the nature on their doorstep matters?

We're looking for a Policy Officer to join our team at an exciting time to help influence the future of nature in the Oxford-Cambridge Arc.

What is the Oxford-Cambridge Arc, and why is it important?

The Oxford-Cambridge Arc is a major infrastructure and housing initiative, driven by the UK Government and local leaders to link the economic powerhouses of Oxford and Cambridge and scale up economic growth in the region. The RSPB is committed to maintaining pressure on the UK Government to ensure all development in the Arc is within environmental limits and results in an area substantially better for nature. As a flagship initiative, we expect the Arc to meet the highest standards of environmental decision-making, but early signals from government are disappointing.  Now is a critical moment to engage in both national and local frameworks, with the Spatial Framework’s consultation period currently planned to run until towards end 2022

What will you be working on?

  • You'll be leading development and delivery of the Rethink the Arc campaign, including close working with NGO partners
  • You'll be working with colleagues across RSPB to develop and advocate RSPB policy to MHCLG and Defra on the OxCamArc
  • You'll be working with with the OxCam Arc Environment sub-group and local leaders
  • You'll be engaging with the Natural England-led Arc BNG working group
  • And you'll be building relationships with relevant community groups e.g. Stop the Arc, Friends of the River Cam

Which key skills and experience will we be looking for?

  • Excellent multi-disciplinary team building skills
  • Demonstrable partnership and relationship-building skills
  • Experience of analysing government policy - experience of planning policy particularly beneficial
  • Proven ability to develop credible policy positions based on sound evidence and expertise
  • Experience of developing advocacy strategies and good political instincts
  • Written and verbal communication skills of a high standard, persuasive and professional
  • Excellent advocacy skills with demonstrable experience of advocacy to local or national government
  • An understanding of the role of public-facing campaigning and communications in influencing advocacy outcomes - you will work with other colleagues to deliver campaigns, but some experience of both is essential
