We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Team Manager to join us on a permanent basis working across the Hoofstock section. This post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a variety of hoofstock species including Rothschild’s Giraffe, Black Rhinos, Okapi, Grevy’s Zebra, and Malayan Tapir to name a few.

Chester Zoo aims to set a benchmark for animal welfare and the successful candidate must be able to deliver an excellent level of animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals; ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards.

The role:

The role will involve assisting the Team Manager in the daily management of the Hoofstock section along with mentoring, training and developing the team under the direction of the Team Manager.

The successful candidate will be able to develop and implement new ideas for improving husbandry, building strong working relationships with other departments to ensure standards are met.

This role will also involve representing Chester Zoo and the Hoofstock team for media interviews and internal and external meetings, workshops and conferences in the UK and overseas.

The successful candidate will have:

• A HND or degree level qualification in a zoological related science or equivalent practical experience

• Extensive knowledge and expertise in animal husbandry and management with a focus on hoofstock including Rhinoceros’ and Giraffes including several deer and antelope species.

• Experience of supervising a team and will be able to organise and prioritise tasks in a dynamic environment

• A good understanding of risk assessments and safe working practices

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• A full driving licence valid in the UK

• Competency in the use of computers and basic software packages (including an understanding of ZIMS) would be advantageous
