Wardell Armstrong LLP is a successful multi- disciplinary environmental consultancy with offices throughout the UK employing almost 500 staff are now seeking a Senior Project Officer or Assistant Project Manager in our Birmingham office.

Wardell Armstrong is looking to expand their West Midlands office to help fulfil client commitments primarily within the West Midlands region. As such we are looking for a highly motivated individual who can take on a senior role on varied archaeological projects in the Midlands, as well as manage post excavation. The successful candidate will have significant previous experience of managing archaeological fieldwork, and be confident in supervising a team of archaeologists. The successful candidate will have a proven report writing ability and previous survey experience is essential.

The position is full-time position based initially at the company offices in Longbridge Birmingham, when not supervising fieldwork in the Midlands.

Responsibilities:

  • To undertake a senior role, managing a team of site assistants on site overseeing the excavation, interpretation and recording of archaeological features in accordance with Wardell Armstrong standards;
  • To manage and undertake the surveying of the site and taking of photographic imagery;
  • To be responsible for the delivery and smooth running progress of project site work in terms of excavation and records;
  • To manage and plan Site Assistant resource and activities liaising between Project Managers, Supervisors and Project Officers to assist in the smooth running and progress of projects;
  • To undertake Health and Safety Risk Assessments for site work and provide health and safety instruction to Site Assistants whilst on site and be responsible for both themselves and their colleagues;
  • To manage and oversee the production of a coherent and fully integrated site archive in accordance with our standards and procedures.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • A number of years site experience, involving a variety of archaeological projects;
  • work Degree level education in a relevant subject or suitable commercial experience;
  • Experience and understanding of UK commercial archaeological projects;
  • Experience of all aspects of archaeological fieldwork;
  • Valid UK work permit;
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to drive company vehicles;
  • Excellent organisational skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability to work to time constraints;
  • Understanding of health and safety responsibilities on development sites.

Desirable:

  • Archaeological report writing and proficiency with windows office including word and excel;
  • Experience and confidence in surveying techniques, including digital recording;
  • Capability in other specialisms such as historic building recording, geophysical survey, artefact or ecofact specialism;
  • Higher academic qualification in archaeology or related discipline;
  • Practitioner membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (PCIFA);
  • H&S qualifications and/or CSCS card.
