A teacher of Design Technology & Engineering is required for this academically selective, coeducational North London day school. The role might suit a qualified teacher from the independent or state sectors or a technology or engineering graduate wishing to become a teacher. Expertise in Design Engineering syllabuses will be a particular recommendation.

The successful applicant will join a team of five specialist teachers, who work in a modern, well-resourced department with the assistance of three technicians. The person appointed will be required to teach pupils from Year 7 through to Year 13. Interest amongst the pupils is high and there is considerable scope for someone with imagination and drive to have a significant curricular impact, to assume additional departmental responsibility, or to help further develop one of the school’s most successful extra-curricular programmes.

Applicants should be academically well qualified in their field and be able to inspire academically-minded, intelligent pupils with an enthusiasm for technological processes, invention and innovation. Additionally, experience in, or a feeling for engineering, electronics or computer science would be a recommendation, as would be an enthusiasm for hands-on design and technological projects.

The formal programme of study of Design Technology Engineering is compulsory for pupils in the core curriculum up to KS3. We run the OCR Design Technology GCSE and the OCR Design Engineering A Level. The subject is popular both at GCSE and A level, particularly with pupils who have an interest in pursuing related degrees.

DTE is taught in a custom-built Art, Design and Technology Centre at Highgate. There are three teaching classrooms, three well-equipped workshops, two ICT suites, an electro-pneumatic lab and an automotive workshop. Additionally there is a departmental office and two separate prep rooms, which are extremely well-resourced, including 3D printers, a laser cutter, etc.

The department coordinates regular entry to a variety of national competitions and boasts significant success, including in Vex Robotics, Greenpower, the IET Faraday Secondary Challenge, the Technology Design Innovation Challenge and the Triumph Design Awards. The department organises pertinent educational visits within the London area, and also runs a number of very popular clubs, including Automobile Society and Robotics. Examples of the department’s work and various extra-curricular activities can be seen on Twitter and Instagram.

Teachers at Highgate enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and exceptionally well-resourced environment and are provided with significant assistance from a range of support staff. Salaries are competitive at all levels.
