Fixed term contract for 18 months

The V&A’s Conservation Department fulfils an important role in helping the Museum deliver its wider objectives; it contributes to the care and preservation of the collections, preparing them for display, loans and exhibitions; it also extends our knowledge of objects by investigating their materials and technology.

We are seeking an objects conservator with a clear specialism in metalwork to lead the conservation and preparation for a group of objects from the Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Collection which will be touring as an exhibition from October 2020. This will include a core group of silver and gold objects, as well as a number of micromosaics, pietre dure and enamel miniatures.

You will undertake all aspects of practical preventive and interventive conservation, predominantly on metals objects, but will also have a practical knowledge of the conservation of other materials including stone, wood, gemstones and enamels to enable you to assess and examine objects within the Gilbert Collection and prepare them for the tour. The ability to evaluate conservation problems, develop solutions and produce practical work and documentation of a high standard within tight deadlines will be important to making the role a success.

You will be highly self-motivated, with project management skills. You will be able to organise your workload with the minimum of supervision. You will work independently or as part of a team. You will have good interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate good communication skills, both verbal and written. An ability to express yourself clearly and appropriately to different audiences is important.
