Subject Leader Geography, TLR 2

 Purpose

The Geography Subject Leader is expected to lead in the subject area and manage the tasks associated with the smooth delivery of the subject within the Humanities Faculty.

 Responsibilities

 Pupil Progress:

  • Be responsible for pupil performance and raising attainment in line with the academy’s targets for the subject area, supporting other staff in the pursuit of excellence and the promotion of academy curriculum and behaviour policies.
  • Track and monitor pupil progress within the subject and ensure appropriate interventions are put in place for those students who are underperforming in two consecutive data drops. This will require liaison with the Faculty Leader, Assistant Faculty Leader and Vice Principal (Pupil Progress).
  • Ensure that effective assessment and feedback to students is happening within the subject, so that all students are in no doubt about their target, their current grade/ level and what they need to do to get to the next grade/ level in the subject. This will involve sampling exercise books/ assessments and talking to students.
  • Liaise with parents, as necessary and in accordance with academy reporting policies, regarding the progress and performance of their children.
  • Liaise with other staff including Learning Support over pupils needing additional help, including those who are very able, implementing where appropriate EHCPs and monitoring their effectiveness.
  • Maintain effective records in the subject. Check that assessments are taking place according to the calendar and that data is being entered into central records such as Go4Schools.
  • Group pupils appropriately to the subject and disseminate information to pupils.

 Teaching and Learning:

  • Ensure teaching and learning in the subject delivers high quality provision including the development of schemes of learning which have embedded within them, the delivery of communication, reading and writing, mathematics and SMSC skills.
  • Write and oversee the schemes of learning related to the subject, e.g. the development of differentiated pupil resources, mark schemes etc.
  • Lead opportunities for subject teaching staff to work collaboratively to develop teaching and learning resources for the subject area. Ensure effective moderation of marking takes place within the team.

 Keep up to date with and respond to national developments in the subject area and teaching practice and methodology.

 Leadership and Management:

  • Induct new members of staff responsible for teaching the subject and provide support for non-specialist teachers.
  • Liaise with the Examinations Officer and Academy Manager for the provision of arrangements for examinations.
  • Monitor stock and resources for the subject and where appropriate be responsible for the delegated management of a cost centre.
  • Promote teamwork and motivate staff to ensure effective working relations.
  • Be responsible for the day-to-day management of staff within the subject area and act as a positive role model.
  • Take a share in monitoring the performance of staff in accordance with the Academy’s Appraisal and Performance Management policies.
  • Undertake specific projects from time to time, at the request of the Humanities Faculty Leader.

 Behaviour, Accommodation and Safety:

 Support colleagues to maintain a high standard of behaviour within the science area and intervene to provide appropriate support where poor behaviour is affecting teaching, learning and the progress of students and liaise with the BEST team as appropriate.

  • Be familiar with the academy Health and Safety policy. Liaising with the academy Health & Safety Manager will ensure that relevant risk assessments within the subject area comply with national requirements and are reviewed and updated where necessary on an annual basis.
  • Ensure that the subject area accommodation is a safe, tidy and an attractive working environment for all those who use it.
  • Be familiar with the academy Safeguarding Policy and procedures, advise staff on safeguarding matters and report any concerns to the Senior Designated Person or Alternate.

Other Responsibilities:

               By agreement within the Faculty, assist the Faculty Leader with regard to one or more of the following:

                -              liaison with feeder schools

                -              student teachers

                -              liaison with other specified subjects/faculties for cross-curricular working

 Other duties which may be required from time to time as agreed with the Principal/ Faculty Leader, together with all the duties of the generic job description for the classroom teacher (MPR) and Form Tutor or Co-Tutor.

 Duties:

The School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document describes duties which may be required to be undertaken by teachers in the course of their employment. It is the contractual duty of the post-holder to ensure that his/her professional duties are discharged effectively. In recognition of the particular duties to be undertaken by the holder of this job the allowance specified above is payable.
