Working within the Science Learning and Public Engagement department at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the post-holder will primarily be responsible for the delivery of study day sessions for secondary school pupils on a range of astronomy topics. The post-holder will be required to deliver pre-existing content in these sessions, but they will also be required to deliver content relating to their own research and academic experience. While not central to the role, there may be opportunities for other types of work, such as the delivery of planetarium shows, teacher training sessions and formal talks.
The STFC Astronomer must be a capable public speaker with a varied range of skills, knowledge and experience relating to public engagement and a genuine passion for astronomy, space exploration and science communication. To fulfil their duties the post-holder must also be actively involved in STFC funded scientific research, either through post-graduate or post-doctoral work. The role is therefore fixed term and ends when STFC funding ceases at a time to be agreed on appointment.
