We are leading best practice in science, education and husbandry to create a sustainable future for wildlife. We do this by managing animal and plant populations, safeguarding habitats and empowering people to value nature and build conservation into their daily lives. We use scientific evidence to help identify and address many of the challenges our natural world faces. Our research helps in decision making that improves the management of the animals and plants in our care and influence the sustainability of wild populations.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Conservation Scientist: Nutrition to join the Chester Zoo Science Department on permanent basis. Using knowledge from the field of animal nutrition the role will focus on developing and implementing Chester Zoo’s Animal Feeding Programme.

The Role:

  • Run Chester Zoo’s Animal Feeding Programme by formulating new animal diets, and reviewing and amending current animal diets working closely with Animal Curators and Teams, and the Animal Supplies Department.
  • Provide timely nutrition advice and nutritional assessment of food, and keep accurate records of food items, nutrient composition, dietary practice and efficacy.
  • Progress our understanding of animal nutrition through targeted, collaborative research.
  • Participate in relevant scientific conferences, professional associations and science communication opportunities.
  • Provide training and consultancy on animal nutrition to zoo staff and students.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A Master’s degree in an animal nutrition or related field
  • Proven ability to establish credibility, command respect and influence at all levels
  • The ability to present information clearly and concisely in verbal presentations and written communications, including scientific writing
  • A strong commitment to animal health and well-being
  • Proficiency in the use of IT systems and familiarity with statistical software
  • Proven ability to work and contribute in a team environment
  • Proven experience and skill in designing and carrying out research projects, including data collection, processing and analysis
  • Flexibility in approach to research problems
  • Knowledge of zoo management or affiliated conservation industry; general zoo keeping experience is desirable

 Applied nutritional research experience is desirable.

The salary for this role is £29,611.34 per annum based on 40 hours per week, worked Monday-Friday, with occasional evening / weekend work as required.
