Voluntary role
To work alongside the Museum`s Front of House team in a visitor facing role in the public galleries, while supporting the Museum's informal learning programme.
Volunteers support a range of different activities at the Museum including: leading family activities in the galleries/exhibition space; meeting school visits; object handling sessions, storytelling, arts and crafts, puppet shows, and under-fives activities. Volunteers actively engage with our diverse range of visitors to ensure they get the most of their visit to the Museum.
We welcome new volunteers from all walks of life, whether you have an interest in the history of Childhood, our world class Collection or the Museum itself, we’d love to hear from you. Volunteers have been valuable in their support of the Museum, which has experienced a rapid increase in visitor numbers, and so we work to compensate them for their time. Upon becoming a volunteer, you will receive a V&A Volunteer pass, allowing you free admission to exhibitions at the V&A South Kensington, a discount in our V&A shops and cafes, and a number of other benefits. As a Volunteer you will have the opportunity to meet a variety of people, make friends and learn new skills while working alongside knowledgeable and experienced volunteers and members of staff.
Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting the Museum`s visitor experience. The role of our volunteers includes:
- Providing a primary welcome to our visitors
- Working alongside the Museum`s Front-of-House team to welcome school groups to the Museum
- Being a visible and approachable presence in the galleries, while offering information about the Museum’s facilities and Collection
- Delivering informal learning activities in the galleries to our schools and families audience
- Promoting commercial activities
- Helping to increase donations by raising awareness among visitors of the Museum’s charitable status.
Roster and Shift Patterns: All volunteers will be asked to commit to at least six months, working once a week for half a day. Morning shifts run from 9.50 to 13.30; afternoon shifts from 13.20 to 17.00.
Benefits of volunteering at the V&A:
- The opportunity to be involved in the work of one of the world’s leading museums of art and design;
- A learning experience. Volunteers can develop new skills and knowledge, receive training and learn more about the V&A collections and the diverse communities that regularly visit the Museum;
- 15% discount in the shop and public catering areas on production of a V&A Museum pass;
- Free entry to paying exhibitions in some of the most prestigious museums and galleries (by simply showing the V&A Museum pass)
- Informal tours and talks with Museum staff
- Enrichment activities
- Monthly newsletter that highlights events and info specifically for the volunteers
