We’re looking for a clinical consultant in epidemiology/public health who has experience working in the humanitarian, development or disease control sector.  This post offers an exciting opportunity to play a key role as the clinical academic lead for the public health research group in the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust (MLW), based in Blantyre Malawi.

Ideally, you will have previous experience in research focussed on TB and HIV, to help build on the research portfolio of the Public Health Research Group at MLW.

Collaborating internally and internationally you will provide strategic leadership to the public health research group, and champion epidemiology and public health clinical research through interactions across LSTM and MLW and with key partners in the UK and LMICs. This includes in our other global hubs in Nepal, Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

This role also offers the possibility of contributing to clinical sessions at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Malawi if the post-holder is a) suitably qualified and seeks continued revalidation and b) sees continued contribution to clinical service as synergistic with the academic role. Applicants who wish to retain part time, active public health practice with local public health authorities or providers, are also welcome.

Your role will include, but not be limited to:

Research:

• Undertake international quality research in line with LSTM’s strategy that helps maintain LSTM’s reputation as a global, research-intensive Higher Education Institution 
• Contributing as lead, senior and co-author in peer-reviewed outputs, as expected by the subject area/discipline in terms of types and volume of output which are internationally excellent and/or world leading to contribute to LSTM’s REF return
• To identify new strategic research opportunities that have the potential for significant growth and promote engagement and collaboration with external academic organisations and funders 

Teaching and Learning Support:

• Support and promote an active research and teaching culture that fosters the highest achievements, encourages originality and innovation and enriches the student learning experience 
• To create opportunities for, and support, monitor and advance the development of early- and mid-career researchers 
• Liaise with LSTM’s Education Faculty and Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team to embed technological innovation in the curriculum development of new and existing programmes

 Leadership & Management:

• Lead the public health group at MLW, aiming to expand the research capacity and collaboration
• Academic leadership of public health and epidemiology by fostering an appropriate culture for the support and integration of excellent research and teaching
• Be an active part of the internal communications network ensuring effective and efficient communication whereby staff are engaged and contribute to MLW and LSTM developments
• Provide mentorship of early- and mid-career researchers to enable their progression to independent research careers. 
• Manage academic performance, staff development and performance review for appropriate staff 

 The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

• Masters or PhD in a relevant area (this could be in public health, health management, epidemiology etc)
• Professionally registered with the Medical Council of Malawi and/or the UK General Medical Council OR Inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register or UK Public Health Register (UKPHR) for public health specialists or be within 6 months of achieving completion of training

• Expert knowledge in a strategically focused area of research with high impact on disadvantaged populations 
• Substantial portfolio of clinical & field research relevant to epidemiology and public health
• Significant previous leadership experience in a research-intensive environment
• Strong track record in obtaining internationally competitive research grant funding 
• Ability lead on projects and to form networks of international collaborators in other institutions
• Ideally, the successful candidate will also hold a postgraduate teaching qualification
