Royal Museums Greenwich is home to the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory, the Peter Harrison Planetarium, Cutty Sark, and the Queen’s House, all located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich. Our mission is to enrich people’s understanding of sea, the exploration of space, and Britain’s role in world history – and we need a keen individual to join the Conservation Department based in the Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre located in Kidbrooke as assistant paintings conservator.

The Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre is home to part of the Museum’s varied collection and includes five core conservation disciplines: Paper, Objects, Frames, Paintings and Textiles. RMG holds a world renowned art collection of around 4,000 oil paintings and an exciting temporary exhibition, loans and permanent gallery update programme which showcase some of these works of art. You will support this programme and work on a variety of paintings including portraits and seascapes on canvas and panel.

Working independently or as part of a team, you will work alongside a team of experienced conservators, as well as interns and students. There will be the opportunity to take on a wide range of conservation treatments of paintings, carry out condition surveys and contribute to the care of collections programme.

With a recognized professional qualification or equivalent experience in paintings conservation and a demonstrable level of practical experience, you will have a proven level of manual dexterity and the ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of audiences. A flexible approach is also important, as is the ability to organise and prioritise your workload.
