Do you want to use your skills and experience to help deliver effective political stakeholder engagement strategies and support Greater Manchester’s objectives? Do you relish the challenge of working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment and want to develop your public affairs skills? Are you interested in gaining valuable public affairs experience in one of the most high profile areas of local policy-making?

This is a fantastic opportunity to play a role in helping Transport for Greater Manchester to manage our political relationships locally and nationally and contribute to a wide-ranging programme of political and public affairs activity in support of the wider work of TfGM and our Greater Manchester partners including the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Mayor.

TfGM’s small, dedicated Public Affairs team has a wide-ranging remit across public affairs and political communication, transport policy-making, strategic communications and stakeholder engagement, and governance and decision-making processes; and you will be a key member of it.

You will be focussed on designing, coordinating and delivering many of the public affairs services and processes which support the day-to-day activity of the team and help us to manage political relationships.

You will also have opportunities to stretch yourself by contributing to the development and delivery of public affairs strategy, by fostering your own relationships with partners internally and externally, and by developing your own subject specialisms in different areas of public transport.

Core responsibilities will include managing political correspondence and casework; political and parliamentary monitoring and intelligence-gathering; working with subject-specialists across the organisation to prepare high-quality written briefings for a variety of purposes and audiences including elected politicians; and to arrange, support and facilitate political engagement meetings and events.

To deliver, and help design, many of the essential public affairs functions upon which the team relies, you will need to be a confident self-starter with the ability to make considered recommendations to colleagues based on your experience and insight, and the professionalism and organisation skills necessary to manage, and take responsibility for, a range of time-sensitive and organisation-critical tasks.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong attention to detail are must-have attributes. You will also have a good awareness of the local and national political and policy landscape and of Greater Manchester’s transport priorities. You will already have some public affairs or other relevant experience, for example in a consultancy or in-house role, or as a member of an MP’s office.

You will have an understanding of political structures, at both a local and national level, and will be familiar with the legislative process and the workings of Parliament.

If you believe you have the skills, attitude and experience required for this 12-month role, we would like to hear from you.

The salary for this role is £27,582 - £32,269 per annum, based on experience.

In return, we offer a fantastic range of benefits, including:
• free home to work travel by train or Metrolink within the Greater Manchester boundary;
• free bus travel across Greater Manchester;
• 27 days annual leave;
• access to the local government pension scheme

We also now offer hybrid working.

If you believe you have the skills and experience we’re looking we would really like to hear from you!

When completing your application, please ensure that you provide clear examples against the essential criteria.
