The Japanese collection at the V&A, has over 48,500 objects, ranging in date from 3000 BCE to the present and covering all media (ceramics and glass, textiles and dress, metalwork, furniture, paintings and prints). Part of the collection is on display in the Toshiba Gallery of Japanese Art, in the Ceramics Galleries and in several other galleries across the museum. Since 1980, there has been a consistent focus on modern and contemporary collecting.

As a scholarly Curator, with relevant expertise, of the Japanese collection, you will have the willingness and ability to communicate that knowledge to a wide audience.

As the Curator, you will form part of the team responsible for the care, research, display and interpretation of the Japanese collection. You will contribute to activities associated with the Toshiba Gallery of Japanese Art and other galleries, and is expected to be actively involved in the Museum’s contemporary initiatives and programmes. You will also be expected to contribute to curatorial and administrative work across the department. 

The Asian Department maintains strong national and international links, and you will participate in the development of curatorial, educational and research partnerships with national and international institutions. You will also be expected to make a positive contribution to the life of the wider Museum, including active participation in relevant gallery and learning projects, through the exercise of curatorial and communication skills, and through research, publication and contributions to online resources.

The successful candidate will have a degree or post-graduate qualification in an appropriate field and experience of working in a museum.
