Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is comprised of the National Maritime Museum, Royal Observatory, the Peter Harrison Planetarium, Cutty Sark and Queen’s House, all located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Maritime Greenwich, London. RMG’s mission is to enrich people’s understanding of the sea, the exploration of space, and Britain’s role in world history.
The Museum holds one of the largest collections of navigational instruments in the world, from early instruments used for dead-reckoning in the sixteenth century to eighteenth-century sextants and telescopes to twentieth-century sonar and oceanographic instruments.
Working in the History of Science curatorial team, the post-holder will develop expertise on navigational instruments and the associated scholarship on the history of navigation at sea. This will include exploring wider links between navigation, astronomy, cartography, and horology within the history and context of the Royal Observatory, particularly as we approach its 350th anniversary in 2025. It will ensure that the collections and their related subjects are accessible and made relevant, contemporary and interesting to a full range of audiences.
