Job Description – Education and Wellbeing Mentor

Responsible to:  Head of College

JOB PURPOSE

To provide a high-quality education support service to Service Users in accordance with Nova Education Trust policies, procedures and practices and the standards set by the Regulatory Body.

KEY TASK AREAS AND RESPONSIBILTIES

  • To support the Learning Development Co-Ordinator to ensure that EHCPs are implemented in full
  • To provide relevant and appropriate emotional, physical, and sensory regulation support to pupils, on an individual or group basis, in order to enable them to access the curriculum as independently as possible
  • To support the Learning Development Co-Ordinator in organising the classroom, its resources, pupil access and displays to provide a stimulating learning situation appropriate for pupils with autistic spectrum disorder, with particular focus on ensuring and promoting the appropriate use of strategies to support emotional, physical and sensory regulation.
  • To proactively support pupils to access their education and engage in wider college life by removing barriers to both learning and social situations, with a goal to independently access higher education or employment after MV16.
  • To support the Learning Development Co-Ordinator to write, update, implement and evaluate documentation relating to the individual student.
  • To work collaboratively with the Learning Development Co-Ordinator and teachers to adequately plan to ensure the safety of pupils, in line with risk assessments, while both on and off site
  • To contribute as a member of the School’s multi-professional team, ensuring good working relationships with colleagues
  • To maintain regular communication both informally and in meeting times, ensuring the individual needs of the student are being met effectively
  • To keep up-to-date with educational practice and SEND related strategies.
  • Communicate effectively with parents to ensure a consistent approach and to be a link between School and Home
  • Ensure students time is used productively and appropriate resources are available to them and that students engage in the ‘Wider Study’ programme
  • To promote positive wellbeing strategies with individuals and amongst the wider student body
  • Working with students in groups or as individuals to maximise the effectiveness of study support time by assisting students with general study skills such as time management, research skills etc; ensuring that students work objectives are set and worked towards during each session and; utilising progress review information to co-create learning strategies with individual students
  • Oversee and monitor attendance of all students, paying particular focus on persistent absence, and attendance patterns working closely with leaders to highlight areas of concern.

GENERAL

  • Ensure awareness that the service operates to agreed budgets and contribute to keeping within these budgets as instructed
  • Exercise vigilance in respect of Health and Safety and promptly report all hazards and/or remedying them where appropriate. Undertake all duties in a manner calculated to minimise or avoid unnecessary risks, personally or to others
  • Report issues and/or incidents relating to staff and students that have arisen in the day promptly to the relevant Line Manager or appropriate person
  • Operate at all times in accordance with NOVA policies and procedures, with particular reference to Safeguarding, Child Protection, Whistleblowing, Complaints and Behaviour Policies
  • Participate in training and take responsibility for personal development
  • Participate in team meetings, supervisions and annual reviews in accordance with Company policy and the standards set by the Regulatory Body
  • Work to promote the Centre as a valued, professional asset within its community and conduct themselves at all times in a manner that reinforces this image
  • Ensure that all actions are in the interests of the students and organisation
  • To work to and exhibit the values of the Company and maintain standards of behaviour in accordance with NOVA policies, procedures and practices
  • To carry out any other reasonable and relevant duties as required.
