Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. The Astronomy Engagement department is based at the Royal Observatory Greenwich and undertakes a wide range of science communication and engagement programmes and activities for Public and Educational audiences. Reporting to the Planetarium Astronomer, or Senior Planetarium Astronomer, the Astronomy Presenter primarily focuses on delivering planetariums shows and other astronomy programmes. Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining up to date knowledge in astronomy and astrophysics and awareness of current relevant news stories to ensure science content delivered to audiences is accurate.

The successful candidate will need to have a degree in a relevant STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subject or astronomy related FE qualifications., excellent knowledge of astrophysics/astronomy and space science, and excellent presentation skills, with the ability to learn new material quickly and present it confidently to a wide range of audiences. An understanding of the national curriculum for science in the UK and experience of working with children, professionally or voluntarily, is essential. The postholder will have experience of working with a wide range of audiences, with an emphasis on school students and SEND audiences.

This is a zero-hours, casual worker role in band 6 – Management and Technical Specialists. The postholder would need to be available to take up shifts mainly taking place in the evenings or on weekends, as well as weekdays throughout term-time and holidays. Work opportunities will be relatively frequent but irregular and will usually be offered 1 month in advance. The post-holder will be required to work 3-6 hours on any given day, with breaks provided for those working 4 hours or more.

Salary: £15.17 per hour
