In Africa, we support a broader number of species over a wider range of countries but all coordinated through our conservation partner TUSK. About the team …

The Animal Operations team are committed to creating a positive, engaging atmosphere where teammates work in strong collaboration with each other. Their focus is on ensuring the animals welfare is maintained at the highest level with the significant contributing to the conservation of endangered species.

What this role will entail …

Reporting to the Head of Animal Operations, and with plans to grow your team, the Conservation and Research Manager will be primarily providing the direction, supervision, development and auditing of conservation and research projects within Longleat animal departments or their representatives.

All research and conservation work will be validated and meet legal requirements of a modern zoological collection with additional heritage and native species included. Overseeing all aspects of current and newly identified projects, including planning, monitoring, collating data, evidencing, and preparing material for publication whilst evolving and exceeding the company values and requirements for conservation & research.

What you will do and how you will make an impact …

  • Lead the development and implementation of all Longleat conservation projects.
  • Research to ensure all habitats are sustainably and ethically beneficial.
  • Provide clear, identified goals and reporting.
  • Build meaningful relationships with elements of further education, scientific institutions, and research organisations to facilitate the best and most valid research projects are identified and engaged..

About you …

  • You have strong understanding and experience in a variation of global conservation projects, both in-situ and ex-situ, ideally with a focus on sub-Saharan Africa, and heritage described UK habitats, species, and diversity.
  • You have proven background in biodiversity management and species conservation projects.

Examples of work …

  • You have led and managed large-scale programmes/projects working with research bodies and academic establishments.
  • You have created a Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP).

What will I need to be considered for this role?

  • Evidence of maintaining working relationships with local authorities and NGOs.
  • A masters -level degree in conservation or research management subject.
  • At least one year of field work experience.
  • Proven skills in recognition of Biodiversity management and species conservation projects.
  • Strong skills in project management, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience of raising public awareness of wildlife and environmental issues.
  • A full current driving licence.

 What will I receive in return?

You will receive a salary of £27,000 - £35,000, in addition to a range of attractive benefits that include;

This is a permanent 40 hour contract, working 5 days out of 7, including weekends, evenings and bank holidays as required. The earliest start time is 8am, and the latest finish time is 8pm, varying in accordance with opening times.
