A key objective for this role is to support the delivery of a series of major temporary exhibitions (including significant international collaborations), permanent galleries and smaller redisplays across the sites of Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG). Situated at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, RMG consists of the National Maritime Museum, Royal Observatory Greenwich,
Cutty Sark, and Queen’s House. Our mission is to enrich people’s understanding of the sea, the exploration of our universe, and Britain’s role in world history.
The Exhibitions Interpretation Curator works with colleagues from across the museum to research, develop and evaluate displays, taking a lead role in exhibition interpretation using a wide variety of techniques. Liaising, with Research Curators, Project Managers, Collections Management, Conservation and Learning specialists, is particularly important, as are the relationships built with external partners and key stakeholders. The post holder will also work closely with internal and external designers (3D, Graphic and Digital) throughout exhibition development, ensuring that displays are realised to the highest standards and that communication with our visitors is effective and meaningful.
This is an exciting time for interpretation development at RMG. The recent opening of four new galleries at the National Maritime Museum has sparked a re-appraisal of practice across the museum and led to a strategic re-orientation, placing audiences more directly at the heart of the Museum’s work. Opportunities for community consultation and co-curation are central to our approach, ensuring the presence of multiple perspectives, the development of under-represented audiences and sustainable approaches for inclusion in the museum.
This post requires an experienced and enthusiastic team player, with strong interpersonal skills, able to think creatively and use their own initiative, with a good understanding of best practice in museum exhibitions, display and interpretation.
