Mechanical Design Manager

Bamber Bridge

James Fisher Nuclear (JFN) specialise in the design and manufacture of nuclear decommissioning technologies, including remote handling systems and equipment designed for segmentation of irradiated materials. This can be standalone equipment or complete integrated turnkey systems depending on the client’s requirements.

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Mechanical Design Manager to join our Engineering Team at JFN. You will play a key role in our engineering productivity and quality, design tasks, employee development, continual improvement and tendering tasks. You will also be the technically responsible person and hold additional line management responsibilities. You will work closely with the Engineering Manager to maximise productivity and quality whilst also developing your team and improving processes.

We will look to you to supervise our team of engineers, attend resource planning meetings and promote compliance within both client and statutory requirements. You will also be involved in employee development by conducting performance appraisals, encouraging a supportive learning environment and identifying training needs. You will undertake ongoing assessments of engineering processes to identify and implement potential improvements. You will also have more general line manager responsibilities such as dealing with sickness, pay reviews and any day-to-day management tasks.

As the technically responsible person, you will be accountable for the technical management and delivery of projects within specified time, cost, and quality. You will work closely with the project management team to ensure understanding of the technical delivery and to minimise JFN’s exposure to risk. You will also carry out design tasks and production of concept design for tendering stages.

We are looking for a delivery-focussed, commercially aware individual who has been responsible for a variety of diverse projects ranging in size and complexity. You must have the ability and desire to support, motivate and develop others and proven organisational and planning abilities. You should also have experience or familiarity with continual improvement methodologies. You must be a chartered Engineer and be educated to at least Higher Apprenticeships level (ideally HND or degree).
