Horology and Object Conservator

Key responsibilities:

  • Continue to develop expertise in horology conservation and undertake conservation treatments of the museums object collection, within agreed work plans.
  • Carry out a regular preventive conservation programme for:
  • Horological instruments such as inspecting and winding all operating clocks on a weekly or daily cycle.
  • Monitoring and management of the time ball.
  • Advise and assist with the movement of horological objects.
  • Undertake all treatments in line with Conservation Standards and code of ethics, using appropriate materials and appropriate techniques.
  • Carry out condition assessments and undertake treatments to prepare objects for loan, digitisation, publication etc.
  • Undertake courier trips for UK and international loans as required.
  • Provide advice and undertake routine collections care duties of objects on open display and in stores; make bespoke storage and display solutions for museum objects.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation using the Museum's electronic collections management database (currently Mimsy XG).
  • Work efficiently within a team to ensure projects are completed within a given time frame.
  • Contribute to the Conservation Department's outreach and learning programme as appropriate.
  • Supervise volunteers, interns and students, and contractors as required.
  • Participate in the safe management and awareness of hazards within the collections, complying with current H&S regulations and safe working practices.
  • Maintain the studio space including ensuring the space and equipment comply with all health and safety legislation needed for this area as well as carrying out risk assessments.
  • The above mentioned tasks are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post holder may be called upon to carry out such other appropriate duties as may be required by the Museum within the competence of the post holder. 

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • A recognised professional qualification in the conservation of Horology.
  • Strong metal working skills.
  • A good general knowledge and interest in all things mechanical
  • Demonstrable experience of object conservation covering both organic and inorganic materials and objects of varied provenance.
  • Working knowledge of materials science.
  • Good organisational skills, ability to plan and prioritise work.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Able to work at heights and lift weights up to 20-25kg.
  • Able to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge and training in health and safety matters related to machinery regulations.
    Awareness of COSHH and Health & Safety issues at the work place.

Desirable

  • Training in fine engineering, for example mechanical or electrical engineering.
  • Experience of project management.
  • Published articles in refereed or non-refereed journals or on the web. 

Terms and Conditions:

The post holder will work a 36 hour week, core hours Monday to Friday 8.00am to 4.00pm, with an additional hour to be worked in agreement with line management.

Salary: £26,000 - £30,000 per annum
