Governor - Hollybank School

Reference: SEP20217925
Expiry date: 2021-10-21 21:00:00.000
Location: Mirfield
Salary: Voluntary
Benefits: Can be discussed at interview or prior to application if required.

At Hollybank we nurture, teach and care for children, young people, and adults with multiple and profound disabilities. The school is part of a wider organisation which provides ‘quality of life for life’ through its nursery, special school, residential homes, respite placements and adult daytime activity programmes. Our governing body is responsible only for the school and reports to the trustee directors who oversee the Trust as a whole.

We hope that this role gives our governors the knowledge that they are helping the school and its pupils as well as the satisfaction of giving something back to the community. Alongside a sense of purpose and achievement they develop new skills, which may be useful elsewhere, and have access to training and support to help them fulfil their duties and responsibilities.

What are governors?

  • All governors share the responsibility of making the governing body effective and efficient by setting the remit of the body, being well-informed and attending the meetings.
  • The strength of the governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide range of backgrounds, share out the duties amongst its members and be able to take decisions as a group. No one governor is expected to know it all.
  • No one governor is responsible for the governing body, not even the chair.
  • All governors share the responsibilities and work as a team.
  • Governors are not legally liable as individuals.

What is the role of a school governor?

  • To support the school, but not uncritically
  • Explain its policies to parents and the community, but not blindly
  • Watch its standards, but with care, humility and an open mind
  • Help settle disputes fairly and conscientiously
  • Oversee it policies and its use of resources, but not in tiresome detail

What are governors responsible for?

  • Monitoring and evaluating the work of the school
  • Appointing new staff
  • Overseeing the school budget (within the wider Trust budget which is overseen by the Board of Trustees.)
  • Securing high levels of attendance and good standards of pupil behaviour
  • Ensuring that all children in the school have access to a broad and balanced curriculum which is suitable to their age, needs and interests, and prepares them for adult life.
  • Ensuring the health and safety of pupils and staff (within the wider Trust context.)

What do we expect from our governing body?

  • Attendance at meetings.
  • Get to know the school, its strengths and areas for development, and show an interest in school life.
  • Work as a member of the team (governing body) in the best interests of the school.
  • Respect all governing body decisions and support them in public.
  • Act within the framework of policies and legal requirements.
  • Commit to training and development opportunities.
  • Take on a link governor role.

If you have any further questions please contact the clerk to the governing body, Lucy Ford l.ford@hollybanktrust.com 01924 490833.

Closing date: 21st October 2021.
