HMP Spring Hill’s education department are looking for an experienced lecturer / tutor / teacher to support and prepare learners for their CSCS exams. You will be teaching the CSCS curriculum to a diverse group of learners within the prison. Helping learners to achieve success and obtain their CSCS cards will support them to gain sustainable employment upon release.

Alongside the CSCS curriculum, HMP Spring Hill are looking for a creative and passionate individual who can tutor within one or several vocational subjects including, but not limited to Painting and Decorating, Plumbing, Bricklaying, Tiling or Plastering.

As a Lecturer within our Milton Keynes College Offender Learning team you will help to develop a strong CSCS Curriculum and Vocational programme that meets the needs of the learners, prison and Milton Keynes College.

This is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated lecturer / tutor / teacher to deliver high learner success, through effective teaching and delivery in CSCS and Vocational subjects. This vacancy would suit a highly motivated teacher, with a can do approach to education. The ideal candidate will be a passionate and creative lecturer, who can thrive upon working within a challenging yet rewarding environment, who can offer skills & knowledge to our learners and guide them throughout their courses.

About HMP Spring Hill / Grendon:

Working at HMP Spring Hill and Grendon

For many of the staff employed to work at HMP Spring Hill, they also have an opportunity or are required to teach at HMP Grendon (less than two minute walk between sites).

HMP Grendon is a unique Therapeutic Category B national prison housing approximately 220 long term, prolific (re)offending adult males.

The Education Department works closely with our prison colleagues to deliver relevant long courses that help prepare learners for employment and positive community living upon release. Courses include: English and Maths Functional Skills (Entry 1 to Level 2), IT, Business, Barista, Horticulture, Cleaning, Personal Social Development skills and Family/Parenting. Education runs 4 afternoons (Mon – Thurs) from 13:45- 16:45. During the mornings the men are involved in therapy work with a wide team of clinical and officer staff on the wings.

HMP Spring Hill is an Open Category D (resettlement) prison, housing approximately 320 male prisoners who are at the end of their custodial sentence and working towards resettlement. Residents at Spring Hill are considered low risk and are well underway with rehabilitation and resettlement. Courses at Spring Hill are as above, with additional vocational courses such as Carpentry, Plumbing, Professional Cookery, Customer Service and Bookkeeping and CSCS. Education runs from 8:30 – 11:30 Monday to Friday and 13:00 – 16:00 Monday to Thursday.

As a department, we endeavour to inspire learners to achieve. Learner voice consistently reports that tutors have high expectations of themselves and their learners and that feedback from learners is acted upon to make improvements. Learners and tutors echo that they enjoy coming to education and that they feel safe whilst in Education at Grendon and Spring Hill.

As a successful candidate, you will:

Hold a relevant qualification (level 3 or above).
Hold a recognised teaching qualification (DTLLS, PGCE, Cert Ed) or willing to work towards
Hold relevant assessor/verifier awards.
Have teaching/training or vocational experience in relevant subject area and relevant up-to-date knowledge.
Have a proven track record of managing and supporting diverse groups of learners through nationally accredited programmes.
Have experience of identifying, developing and sharing innovative and creative teaching resources
Have experience of working with students who may have little experience of education and training (desirable).
Have knowledge of current curriculum and accreditation developments within Further Education and specific subject area(s).
Have the ability to teach creatively, adapting to the needs of a variety of learners and willing to explore new teaching and learning strategies.
Have good IT skills and willing to develop further.
Show accuracy and precision in written presentation.
The requirement of this role is to work across the whole prison estate, on all wings where education is delivered.
