Volunteer LGBTQ tour guides wanted

Reference: AUG20180789
Expiry date: 2018-08-28 17:30:00.000
Location: South Kensington
Salary: Voluntary
Benefits: Exclusive tours of our galleries led by our curators as well as other enrichment activities

How many people want to come on the V&A’s multi-award winning LGBTQ tours? The answer is more than we can currently handle. To meet the growing demand, and continue to deliver a fabulous visitor experience, we need more guides.

The V&A guided tours are all led by volunteers, they are legendary for their quality and for providing visitors with new insights into the collections - it’s about uncovering the hidden stories in the objects owned by the nation and making them accessible to everyone.

  • We will train you in guiding, induct you into the V&A and its LGBTQ mission, provide you with a mentor and support you all the way to going live and beyond
  • You will commit to the training, conducting your own research and developing a tour which meets our standards. This will take around three months. We then ask you to commit to delivering at least eight tours a year for two years
  • You do not need previous experience of guiding but you do need commitment and the desire to have fun.

If you have a strong interest in the LGBTQ stories our collections can tell and a passion for sharing them with the public, then please send a letter of no more than one page outlining why you want to be a V&A LGBTQ guide and a little about yourself, along with a short CV. Email them to: vevr@vam.ac.uk

Closing date: 28th August 2018

Interview date: 8th September 2018

Initial training date (11am-3pm): TBC

The LGBTQ tours grew out of the work of the Museum’s LGBTQ Working Group, which aims to unearth previously hidden or unknown LGBTQ histories in the collections and to facilitate understanding of LGBTQ identities and histories through research, events, discussion and debate.
