The Victoria and Albert museum is inviting applications from UK based practitioners working across all photography & motion media who wish to develop their practice or portfolio of work. We are interested in practitioners who will work in a critically informed way, with a thematic focus on movement and transit in relation to our collections.

In conjunction with the new Photography Centre that recently opened in South Kensington and continued Future Plan projects in various areas of the museum and in East London (Museum of Childhood and V&A East, HERE East in The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park), the museum is undergoing a significant physical transformation.

Just over 150 years ago, photographer Julia Margret Cameron was invited to make experimental work in the rooms given to her by Henry Cole (the museum’s first Director), birthing the first unofficial residency at the V&A. Continuing to capture strategic moments in the museum’s history, as Cameron did through her work provides a creative platform for on-going evaluation and reflection, as well as visual critique for future innovation.

With museums becoming ever more important civic environments that facilitate space for public engagement - as well as embodying practices and processes of the past, present and future - we are in a position to document, inform and connect with our audiences throughout this moment of change at the V&A.

The residency will take place at the V&A South Kensington in London over a nine-month period from 14 October 2019 to 13 July 2020. The V&A will provide a £12,000 bursary and a studio space within the Museum’s Sackler Centre for arts education.

Applicants should have an interest in developing their practice and a good track record of producing and performing high quality work. We will consider applications from collectives as well as individual practitioners.

Interviews will take place on 27 June 2019.
