Astronomy Education Officer

Working within the Astronomy Education Team, the post holder will work directly with school audiences on a regular basis. They will focus on redeveloping existing programmes and resources for schools and developing new ones in response to the evolving First Light project. They will also contribute to the development of new galleries and facilities, advocating for the needs of formal learners.

In support of the wider Astronomy Engagement department, the post-holder will also deliver public programmes for various audiences, ranging from planetarium shows to adult evening events. They will also support a wide range of other science communication outputs - in person, online, in print, and on camera.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To adhere to standards of best practice in the fields of science education, science communication, and public engagement.
  • To develop, present and maintain programmes and resources for primary and secondary pupils and their teachers.
  • To maintain digital outputs for schools and teachers, ranging from social media posts to web content, special projects.
  • To contribute to the development of new galleries, facilities, projects, and initiatives, supporting or leading as required.
  • To actively support engagement with school audiences.
  • To manage part-time and zero-hour staff supporting the delivery of programmes for school pupils in a variety of settings.
  • To represent the Astronomy Education team and the wider department at conferences and in other settings.
  • To present public planetarium shows and informal learning programmes to varied audiences.
  • To support press, media, and publications in relation to relevant projects, delivering interviews and editing or writing articles and books.
  • Any other duties as reasonably requested by the Senior Manager for Astronomy Education or the Head of Department.

Terms and conditions:

Your core hours of work will be 36 hours net per week, usually between the hours of 09.00 and 17.00, working weekends on a rota with rest days to either side. You will work bank holidays unless you are on leave. Full-time, permanent contract.
