James Fisher Nuclear (JFN) is an innovative and fast-growing organisation, our highly skilled teams and long standing heritage enable us to deliver solutions to the most demanding operational and technical challenges faced by our customer base.
They are looking to bring onboard an Apprentice Machinist to add to their team in Malton.

The Role:
o maximise the experience gained in all functions of Machining and to develop an understanding of the business objectives. The Apprentice Machinist is required to undertake work in various manufacturing functions including milling and turning and has responsibility for undertaking or complying with:

  • Production of machined parts by programming, setting up and operating both manual and CNC machines.
  • Continual Improvement.
  • Health & Safety.
  • Quality Compliance.

Key duties & responsibilities:
The Apprentice Machinist will train to become competent and ultimately qualified in the following:

Production

  • Plan machining operations by reading works orders, engineering drawings, specifications and other work instructions.
  • Resolving issues or queries with drawings or other work instructions.
  • Programming CNC lathes and milling machines.
  • Proving programmes and other first-off operations.
  • Setting and operating both manual and CNC machine tools.
  • Ensuring accurate routing data and other issues are recorded.
  • Organising and maintaining both tools and the working environment to achieve efficient operations.
  • Working with the Shift Team Leader to continually push machine operations for the best productivity. 


Continual Improvement:

  • Ongoing assessment of machining processes and procedures to identify and implement improvements.
  • Identifying new working methods, tooling or other systems that may improve efficiency.
  • Identify Lean and 5S opportunities. 


Safety:

  • Awareness, knowledge and understanding of hazards, PPE requirements and emergency procedures.
  • Responsible for house-keeping of allocated work areas.


Promote adherence to JFN’s Health and Safety Policy, for example:

  • Reporting near misses and accidents.
  • Point of work risk assessments and method statements. 


Key skills & competencies:

  • Technical aptitude.
  • Ability to manage his / her own workload and self-manage to deliver tasks.
  • Ability to read, understand and work to procedures and standards.
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Is expected to need general supervision and ask for direction when required


Quality:

  • Adherence to JFN’s manufacturing processes and procedures to support consistency and quality of manufacturing work.
  • Assist Production Engineer(s) and Inspectors to resolve quality issues.
  • Complete self-inspection of produced components prior to final Inspection.


Qualifications:
GCSEs including Maths, English and Science
Starting / undertaking a Craft or Technician Engineering qualification
