We currently have an exciting vacancy for a Learning Designer to play a key role in our Conservation Education and Engagement Department (CE&E).  

The successful candidate will be highly motivated and support the department to effectively deliver graphic design based products for the CE&E team, including acting as a champion for the graphical and visual element of all learning materials. This can include, but is not limited to, the creation of graphics, writing tenders and briefs for external designers to complete larger projects, co-ordination of external contractors and suppliers such as graphic designers and animators.

The Role:

  • Develop and create graphic elements for a wide variety of CE&E outputs (including in-zoo exhibition signage, classroom and staff-led teaching materials and online learning resources).
  • Contribute to research about the educational and conservation impact of our work and use evaluation to drive continual improvement.
  • Maintain a learning design toolkit to document standards and ensure consistency of approach across all work.
  • Support the work of interns, volunteers and work placement students in a variety of relevant duties, providing guidance and training as needed.
  • Follow policies, standard operating procedures and safe working practices. Follow best practice guidance and ensure compliance with all relevant guidelines and legislation, such as copyright law, H&S requirements and DDA / EA compliance.
  • Under the guidance of the Exhibitions and Interpretation Manager commission contractors to create graphics, animations, models and other elements and take responsibility for the ongoing monitoring of their work.
  • Manage allocated resources, ensuring initiatives are well planned and good value for money.
  • Maintain an image and assets library from internal and external sources, including sourcing and creating relevant accounts with stock photograph and film sources.

The successful candidate will have:

 

  • Degree level qualification in graphic design or equivalent level experience.

  • Knowledge of the variety of methods to visually represent information and ideas, such as infographics, and how to apply them.

  • An interest in conservation, ecology and biology.

  • Experience of graphic design within a customer-orientated environment.

 

  • The ability to abridge information in a graphic or visual form and source quality images for graphic use, including seeking copyright clearance for their usage and editing into appropriate formats for our audiences.

 

  • Excellent oral, written and visual presentation skills with the ability to communicate with a wide range of people with varying levels of technical and subject knowledge. Attention to detail is a must.

 

  • Experience in the use of all key Microsoft packages and in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud, specifically InDesign and Illustrator, on a PC and/or Mac.

 

  • Excellent time management, administration and workload planning skills. Able to prioritise conflicting deadlines.

 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work creatively, proactively and effectively under own initiative and as part of a team and able to work under pressure with a positive attitude.

 

  • Experience or knowledge of printing practices and file setup is desirable.

 

Hours of work are 32 hours per week, worked Monday-Friday, with occasional evening and/or weekend work as required.
