James Fisher Shipping Services (JFSS) has unparalleled maritime experience in delivering safe, reliable and cost-effective ship management solutions. As ship owners for more than 170 years, JFSS provides technical vessel and crew management to the James Fisher fleet of tankers, as well as to the wider tanker, research and specialised vessel markets.

We have a new opportunity for a Marine Superintendent to join JFSS. As Marine Superintendent you will ensure the safe operations of ships and compliance to all international marine requirements. You will assist in the implementation and upkeep of the Safety Management System and will also conduct regular ship inspections to ensure compliance to the statutory requirements.

We will look to you to carry out pre-vetting inspections onboard the vessels including conducting crew training on best tanker practice.  You will provide guidance to the Ship Captain/Master onboard for nautical matters and also conduct incident investigation onboard the ship. You will also play a key role in leading and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide an oversight of cargo operations, ensuring safe operations, compliance with Company procedure and the avoidance of cargo related incidents.
  • Responsible for marine related matters including training, development of procedures and instructions.
  • Provide support to the QSE team for responding to Oil Major queries, requests for information and SIRE responses.
  • Provide coaching and training to the ships staff for the use of cargo equipment and tanker best practices. This includes but is not limited to cargo handling, gas testing equipment, cargo equipment and basic tanker practices and procedures.
  • Primarily work with deck officers to identify and deliver training with the aim of continuously improving crew quality and improve fleet operation.
  • Work with Ship Managers to review practices and procedures and propose improvements to the Safety Management System.
  • Incident investigation, as required.
  • Customer liaison and attendance Terminal/Port Liaison Meetings as required
  • Provide assistance to Ship Managers as directed by Fleet Manager or QSE Management
  • Undertake systems and safety related work as required by QSE Management.
  • Review current and proposed legislation to ensure the fleet continue to comply with laws.
  • Administer changes to company systems to ensure effective and efficient management systems are maintained.
  • Plan and co-ordinate emergency response drills and exercises.

Qualifications and Experience

We are looking for Masters/Chief Mates CoC who have experience sailing as a Senior Officer on board tankers. You must be familiar with ISM and ISO 9001 quality systems and hold good verbal and written skills to ensure communications are effective and that reports are clear and concise. You must also have a thorough knowledge of relevant Maritime and QSE legislation such as ISM, ISPS, SOLAS and ISO standards. Whilst it’s not essential, it is highly desirable that you have Auditor Training.
