The Royal Observatory Greenwich (ROG) is part of Royal Museums Greenwich, which includes the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, Queen’s House and Prince Phillip Maritime Collections Centre. The ROG offers a wide range of public programmes and events that seek to engage visitors and national and international audiences with the past, present and future wonders of astronomy and space science.

The Science Learning Department at the Royal Observatory Greenwich is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic individual to lead the Public Astronomy team, managing our offer for families, informal groups, community audiences, independent adults, young people and the general public. Our offer consists of exhibitions, galleries, programmes, one-off events and various types of science communication.

Our programmes and events encompass adult courses, family workshops, observing sessions, live interpretation, lectures and a wide range of other activities. As well as maintaining and developing existing strands of activity, the post-holder will be tasked with creating and developing offers for various audiences. Strategic off-site outreach to promote our on-site offer and engage new audiences is also involved.

The development of galleries and temporary exhibitions is a significant aspect of this role. Working with curatorial and exhibitions, the post-holder will contribute to the development of relevant galleries and exhibitions at the ROG and other sites. In the years to come there will be a strong focus on redeveloping many of the galleries at the ROG, which will be a key component of the role.

Science communication outputs delivered by the team include interviews and articles for the press and media, astronomy books for publications, social media outputs and live-stream events for the web. The post-holder will pro-actively shape these outputs, working in close collaboration with relevant departments and teams.

The post-holder will manage a team of more than a dozen full-time and part-time staff and a significant number of zero hour and volunteer roles, who will support the development and delivery of this activity.

Please see the Job Description attached above for further details.
