  • Set the academy’s personal development, behaviour and safeguarding strategies, within the context of the pertinent DfE statutory guidance, Ofsted framework, and the academy’s distinctive ethos and mission.
  • Establish the philosophy, aims and objectives of the pastoral team (in its widest sense), ensuring that they reflect those of the school.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication across the whole academy and with external stakeholders over all matters pertaining to personal development, behaviour and safeguarding.
  • Promote the impact of high pastoral standards on pupils’ academic progress and attainment.
  • Ensure all academy safeguarding policies meet statutory requirements, and that staff training equips all staff to implement those policies effectively.

  • Ensure that safeguarding administrative systems are sufficiently robust to ensure KHCA contributes positively to multi-agency work and pupils’ safety.
  • Ensure that behaviour administrative systems are sufficiently robust to ensure pupils are held to account for misbehaviour, and that other pupils’ rights to a calm and focussed education are protected.
  • Coordinate KHCA’s representation in multi-agency work, often attending more serious cases such as child protection conferences in person.
  • Coordinate KHCA’s representation in forums pertaining to admissions and exclusions.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with external agencies such as social services, CAHMS, the school nursing service, the Derbyshire Safeguarding Children Board, local secondary schools, the local authority, and the community police force.
  • Work with the academy’s data team to produce and track data relating to personal development, behaviour and safeguarding. Compare this data with national benchmarks in order to prepare and present accurate, concise reports to the school leadership team and local governing body.
  • Provide line leadership to a variety of teaching and support teams, including the designated teacher for looked after children, the learning support team and the pastoral team.
