Milton Keynes College is working in partnership with HMP YOI Brinsford to put education at the heart of the prison system.

We have an exciting opportunity for an Additional Learning Support Practitioner to join our Offender Learning team at HMP YOI Brinsford. The ideal candidate will be someone who is able to inspire and assist learners throughout their academic and vocational studies. The requirement of this role is to work across the whole prison estate, on all wings where education is delivered.

You will be a passionate, creative and empathetic towards our learners and be able to offer them knowledge and guidance throughout their courses.

Responsibilities include:

• To work closely with teaching staff and additional learning support staff in the delivery of good and outstanding support for all learners.
• To manage the initial and diagnostic assessment service in order to identify how learning needs can be effectively supported and monitored.
• To provide cover for a diverse range of teaching sessions as directed by line management, ensuring familiarity and compliance with the appropriate paperwork and procedures within the Department

Hours: 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year
Salary: £18,015 - £21,522 per annum

This role is based at HMP YOI Brinsford. HMP YOI Brinsford is a Category C adult male prison as well as a young adults institute. The Education Department works closely with prison colleagues to deliver relevant courses from Entry Level to Level 2 that help prepare learners for employment upon release. We are proud to boast the Interserve Academy in Industrial Cleaning; the Academy was set up in partnership with Interserve to support young adults to develop employability skills and gain qualifications leading to employment with the company on release.

Other vocational pathways include Barbering, Professional Cookery and Barista, Horticulture, Construction, Recycling, PC Repair, Bicycle Mechanics, Industrial Cleaning and Radio Production.  English and Maths Functional Skills are compulsory for rehabilitating offenders and we have provision at Entry 1 to Level 2.

As a successful candidate, you will:

• Have a good basic general education including GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at Grade C.
• Hold an NVQ2/NVQ3 Teaching Assistant qualification or be willing to work towards.
• Have experience of working in a learning environment.
• Have well-developed interpersonal skills in relating to prison staff and in working with students who may have little experience of education and training.
• Be computer literate and willing to improve your IT skills.
• Have the ability to work as part of a team and on their own initiative.
• Have good organisational skills and be able to meet deadlines.
