The V&A is the national museum of art, design, performance and the world’s leading museum of decorative arts. The V&A continues to reflect its founding purpose: to inspire and support artists and designers and to interest the public in design, and the Director of Design and FuturePlan is at the forefront in delivering that mission and leading the Museum’s approach to, and involvement with, contemporary design practice.

The V&A has arrived at a moment of significant expansion beyond its two directly managed museums - the V&A at South Kensington (a five and half hectare site) and the Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green – with the opening of the V&A’s first gallery overseas, in Shenzhen, China, and the impending opening of V&A Dundee in September 2018.  Most significantly and excitingly of all, is the prospect of a new ‘V&A East’ as part of the planned Cultural and Educational District (CED) in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and the move of the V&A’s entire reserve collection from Blythe House in West London. This, allied to the continuation of an ambitious FuturePlan programme at South Kensington and Bethnal Green, following the completion of the V&A Exhibition Road Quarter in 2017, is the agenda for an experienced, creative and ambitious leader from the design field.

The Director of Design and FuturePlan will require proven inspirational leadership skills as well as extensive experience at a senior level in the management, development and refurbishment of major cultural buildings. As well as experience delivering complex capital programmes, the successful individual will need to have the creative ability to set the standard of design for the V&A.

Closing date for applications is 5.00pm on Friday 09 March 2018
