The project:

The Royal Observatory Greenwich (ROG) will celebrate its 350th anniversary in 2025. This will be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revisit the ways in which the site works, revitalise the displays and rethink the stories that we tell, in an ambitious project that combines master-planning, site improvements and new galleries to increase visitor numbers substantially beyond pre Covid levels.

Set in a World Heritage Site, the home of Greenwich Mean Time, the Prime Meridian and London’s only Planetarium, the ROG holds a unique position as a Science Centre, Museum and Heritage site. The new project will reveal how centuries of scientific work at the ROG have shaped our understanding of the universe we live in and the Earth we live on- a place to ‘Lose yourself and find your place in time and space...’ The ethos of curiosity and wonder will inform how the project is delivered and how visitors engage with it. This project will need to work alongside continuing to keep the site open to the public and the delivery of a rolling engagement programme.

Our guiding principles are:

  1. Awe and wonder: an unforgettable encounter – take visitors to the Universe, exploring time, space, place and belonging. Lose yourself in the beauty of the universe, glimpse infinity, and how it shapes our lives.
  2. Sense of place: an authentic experience – celebrate the inspiring innovation and ideas. Bring them to life by focussing on ROG’s unique assets –evoking the perspectives of astronomers of the past who, like us, looked up to understand the universe and the world we live in, as well as inspiring the astronomers of the future.
  3. Telling stories: encouraging excitement and exploration – guide the visitor to the furthest limits of human knowledge. Probe deeper into the infinity of space, spark curiosity, stimulate the imagination and unearth diverse stories – from the communal to the individual – to explore, understand and respond to the world, our home, our environment.
  4. Building on a historic legacy: a leading voice on astronomy – explore the technologies that allow us to see further out into the universe than ever before and what this tells us. Build on the site’s history of curiosity and creativity which helped uncover secrets of the night sky, aided navigation and established the convention of time.
  5. Site synthesis: prioritising the relationship with the visitor – engage through experience that flows naturally and forges a sense of belonging, creates deeper connections and empowers curiosity.

The programme will deliver against these principles and comprises multiple elements across the ROG site, including:

  • Capital build
  • Commercial fit out
  • Exhibition and Interpretative display (both internal & external)
  • Integral digital aspect (social media, communication, internal infrastructure etc.)

The role:

The Senior Client Project Manager will be responsible for co-ordination of all aspects of the programme and will have an acute understanding of tolerances around time, quality, and cost. We are about to appoint the Architect who will lead a multi-disciplinary team to activate the capital build and we now need an experienced and dynamic project manager to oversee the professional teams and co-ordinate engagement with internal and external stakeholders through to at least 2025.

This is a permanent and full-time role; with six major sites, projects like this would be a main part of our future, so at maturity stage of this project it is anticipated that this role will client project manage other significant capital projects.

Terms & Conditions:

This is a permanent and full-time role. Working hours (one-hour unpaid lunch break a day) will be 36 hours per week, core hours Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm with an additional hour to be worked in agreement with line management. Flexible working options available, with some ability to work from home. This role has a 6-month probation period.

Salary: £60,000 to £65,000 per annum
