The apprenticeship

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Young People Developer, with a passion for physical activity and healthy lifestyles, to gain their Level 3 Community Sport & Health Officer qualification, whilst employed within the Participation Team at British Cycling working on delivery of the Commonwealth Games Legacy Plan in the West Midlands. 

This apprenticeship is an 18-month programme of learning, gaining meaningful qualifications, whilst having full support and mentoring based on your individual needs. 

Successful completers of this programme will be able to move into senior roles within the Sector – leading teams of people or specialising with certain populations, particular sports or programmes. In addition, they will be eligible to apply to become an Affiliate of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

What you’ll be doing

You will focus your energy on the British Cycling’s West Midlands Commonwealth Games Legacy Plan leading and delivering key areas using a place-based approach, including: 

  1. Recruiting and support young volunteers to shape programmes and support delivery of the plan. 
  2. Creating a platform for young people to engage to increase their presence and voice within British Cycling. 
  3. Leading and supporting with the development of digital resources for young people.  
  4. Determining innovative ways to engage with young people.  
  5. Supporting existing clubs and community groups.

You will do c. 28 hours of planning and delivery each week and will also be involved in administration, monitoring and evaluation. You will attend c. 7 hours (1 day) of education each week.

What you’ll need (Essential):

  • Place-based community activation skills and experience, and the ability to make learning fun.   
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills, and the ability to work in a team or on your own, maintaining a high standard of work under pressure.
  • Ability to build rapports, engage, motivate and inspire, relating well to others, providing a positive role model at all times.
  • ICT literacy. 
  • An aptitude, interest and competency in digital, including social media.
  • A positive, enthusiastic attitude.

Training delivered (1 day a week)

  • Level 3 Community Sport & Health Officer qualification.
  • Coach Core specific modules and workshops.
  • Functional Skills in English and Maths (if required, and to be achieved prior to end point assessment).

Include in Your CV / Covering Letter

  • Details about your education – include any GCSE (or equivalent) results in Maths and English, and tell us if you hold a Higher National Diploma, Degree or equivalent Level 4 qualification. 
  • Let us know if you have ever started or completed an apprenticeship before.
  • Confirm that you have the right to work in the UK, telling us if you have been resident in the UK/EEA for the previous 3 years, whether you are a UK national/have a British passport and whether you have an in-date form of ID, such as a passport, driving licence or birth certificate.

Pointers for Filming 

PLANNING:

  • Plan what you are going to say.
  • Check your phone camera is set to a high resolution – ideally 1920p x 1080p.
  • Aim to be in a quiet environment with somewhere to prop your phone securely in landscape position.
  • Aim to be close to the camera.

WHEN RECORDING:

  • Do a quick test to check:
  • The microphone is picking you up.
  • Light is shining on your face and isn’t coming from behind.
  • Your background is uncluttered.
  • Try to feel comfortable and confident and look directly into the lens of the camera and speak clearly.
  • Do a few takes to get it right.

SHARING:

  • Rewatch the whole video to check for any problems.
  • Use free editing software on your phone to trim the beginning and end of the clip.
