Passionate about the climate, seas and people? We currently have an exciting opportunity for someone to develop a flagship project with BirdLife and partners to support development of ‘gold standard’, nature positive offshore wind across the North Sea.

We are looking for an experienced project manager and effective communicator to lead a collaborative foundation year designing and building support for an ambitious long-term partnership programme of work (five years) for nature-positive offshore wind.

This role is for a 12-month fixed term period funded by the European Climate Foundation (ECF) and suitable for secondment opportunities.

To deliver this important work, the Project Manager will be responsible for the following work areas:

  • Work with our offshore wind policy lead to develop the RSPB’s position on what Nature Positive Offshore Wind looks like, utilising the North Sea as a case study for future development
  • Develop and coordinate input to a long-term collaborative project (five years) for nature-positive offshore wind including developing the specifics and generating support. This long-term project would begin with the North Sea and then reach through to other European seas and ultimately beyond.
  • Work closely with BirdLife, BirdLife partners (including NABU), Renewables Grid Initiative – including the Offshore Coalition for Energy and Nature (OCeAN) platform – and other key players across the North Sea to develop shared visions and position statements to support development of sustainable renewable energy with wildlife in mind.
  • Using appropriate Project Management tools and approaches to develop a five-year programme of work to advance our understanding and influence development of nature positive offshore wind, both within the North Sea and more widely within the RSPB as renewable energy focus increases to tackle the current climate emergency.
  • Lead on project management, including determining when activities and events are planned to happen - ensuring the timely completion of the project, identifying, recording and managing risks and issues, putting in place appropriate contingency actions - to reduce the likelihood of events that might prevent project outputs and objectives being delivered on time.
  • Agree and implement a quality strategy - to determine what are the acceptable standards for the outputs and objectives of the projects.
  • Identify and oversee the right governance structure to keep the project on track and ensure adherence to our strategic priorities.
  • Produce relevant project documentation (including highlight reports and lead internal and external communications, coordinating with the project partners and ensuring that stakeholders are kept fully involved and informed in the project development.
  • Work with line manager to manage the foundation project budget to ensure that project costs are kept within agreed tolerances and develop a budget for the five-year work programme.
  • Prepare and submit project funding submissions for the five-year programme of works.

We are looking for a passionate and driven individual, with the following skills and experience to bring to this exciting role:

  • Degree level qualification in a relevant subject or ability to show equivalent work experience
  • Experience of working to a standard project management approach
  • Experience in planning and delivering a number of projects
  • Good understanding of conservation challenges facing our seabirds and the climate emergency
  • Competent IT user (e.g. MS packages, Outlook etc).
  • Attention to detail and ability to understand financial systems.
  • Demonstrable leadership ability, able to lead without line management authority.
  • An ability to produce clear written communications.
  • An ability to persuade and influence a wide range of people, both internally and externally.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage changes within projects.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to find creative solutions.
  • Able to work under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Logical & methodical, analytical and a good eye for detail.
  • Proven time management and organisational skills.
  • Cost and budget management experience
  • Experience of working with external stakeholders (desirable).
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and working in partnerships to achieve shared outcomes (desirable).

Although this role is listed as UK-based, we would be open to the role being based in another North Sea coastal state if this is already the base of the successful candidate.
