Milton Keynes College are currently looking to recruit sessional lecturers to join the Education Department at HMP Spring Hill and are hosting an Offender Learning Careers Open Day to allow candidates an opportunity to take a tour of the facilities and be interviewed by the Education Manager and supporting team.

With a wide range of subjects delivered, a career in Offender Learning would suit individuals who are passionate about getting people re-engaged in learning and who want to develop their teaching skills in a secure educational environment. Working within Offender Learning provides real opportunities to transform lives, by giving offenders the knowledge, self-esteem and confidence to thrive in the world of work.

Education is proven to reduce reoffending rates and improve society within each prison. It’s a crucial part of the rehabilitation process, and often leads to employment or provides the means for self-employment. Milton Keynes College currently have a range of sessional teaching opportunities in the following subjects:English and Maths Functional Skills, Art, Bench Joinery, Business Studies, Electrical Installations, Health & Safety, Plastering & Tiling.

HMP Spring Hill is an Open Category D (resettlement) prison, housing approximately 320 male prisoners who are at the end of their custodial sentence and working towards resettlement. As a department, we endeavour to inspire learners to achieve.

As a successful candidate you will have:

  • A relevant degree or equivalent qualification.
  • A full teaching qualification (DTTLS, PGCE, Cert Ed).
  • Assessor/Verifier Awards (desirable).
  • Teaching/training or vocational experience in a relevant discipline/subject area and relevant up-to-date knowledge.
  • A proven track record of managing and supporting diverse groups of learners through nationally accredited programmes.
  • Experience of identifying, developing and sharing innovative and creative teaching resources.
  • Experience of working with students who may have little experience of education and training (desirable).
  • Knowledge of current curriculum and accreditation developments within Further Education and specific subject area(s).
  • The ability to teach creatively, adapting to the needs of a variety of learners and willing to explore new teaching and learning strategies.
  • A good level of IT literacy and willing to develop further.
  • Accuracy and precision in written presentation.
  • The requirement of this role is to work across the whole prison estate, on all wings where education is delivered.

Hours: Variable
Salary: £23.52 per delivery hour
