We now have an exciting opportunity for someone to join our team as a Legal Manager to support the Integrity & Compliance Director and Head of Legal in ensuring that the highest standards of governance, legal advice and legal protection are achieved and maintained with a primary focus on regulatory, employment, member insurance claims, defence of liability and other contentious issues.

The role of a Legal Manager is all about:

  • Provide advice and support to the Integrity & Compliance Director and Head of Legal in providing advice to British Cycling colleagues, on all legal issues affecting the organisation including, principally, regulatory, employment, member insurance claims, defence of liability and other contentious matters, but also including at times commercial contracts, intellectual property, medical, data protection and property law.
  • Proactively manage British Cycling’s member insurance claims and defence of liability claims (post issue of proceedings) escalating areas to the Integrity & Compliance Director and Head of Legal as required with regular liaison with the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Supporting the Business Services team in their management of the member insurance claims service (pre-issue of proceedings.)
  • Supporting the Integrity & Compliance Director and Head of Legal with commercial contracts as well as event and other contracts and the management of risks associated with those contracts.
  • Ensuring that Technical Regulations are appropriately drafted and enforced.
  • Ensuring advice is given to the Compliance Team to ensure that all compliance, safeguarding, anti-doping and disciplinary matters are managed appropriately.
  • Supporting the Governance Manager and Data Protection Officer; and to assist in ensuring that all legal issues in these areas affecting the organisation are managed appropriately.

You’ll come up with ideas to drive the Integrity & Compliance team forward and work cross functionally with our Regional teams and support network at the National Cycling Centre to promote these activities and events.  In return for delivering consistent results, you’ll receive the opportunity to learn and develop, as well as exciting opportunities to broaden your role and grow within the organisation.

The key skills, knowledge and experience we are looking for are:

  • Sufficient educational attainment to demonstrate ability to carry out the role to the required standard, current Solicitors Practising Certificate with likely PQE of 1-3 years.
  • Understanding of personal injury law, litigation and/or regulatory processes with a wide understanding of English law and its legal system.
  • Good knowledge of Data Protection requirements and an understanding of commercial and contract law
  • An understanding of employment law, regulatory frameworks and legal issues, the Equality Act, legislation, guidance and principles of anti-doping and disciplinary issues in a membership organisation is desirable.
  • Competence in the use of IT tools including spreadsheets, databases, email and word processing.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy, with an ability to analyse and disseminate information whilst keeping robust records.
  • Flexible and adaptable approach demonstrated by someone who is reliable and with a clear understanding of confidentiality and handling matters sensitively. High level of integrity and trust.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

This is a profession which is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check will be required.
