The Collections Moves and Installation Manager is responsible for the practical management of the Art Object Handlers (AOH) team. The post reports to the Senior Manager, Collections Logistics. They will act as the first point of contact for AOH activities and coordinate the movement and installation of objects and collections across RMG sites and other venues in support of the Museum’s exhibitions public programme, Learning & Interpretation community group events, Library & Archive, Curatorial talks, Photography, Digitisation, Publishing, Corporate Events and Press & Public Relations filming events

The post holder is also responsible for the coordination and scheduling of all object movements including the regular weekly programme of object moves requested by Museum departments across sites and for temporary exhibitions (SEG) and permanent displays.

Reports to: Senior Manager, Collections Logistics

Key responsibilities: 

  •  Line manage the AOH team
  • Responsibility for the care and safe handling of objects and works of art, ensuring risk assessments and method statements are completed as required, that advice from Health & Safety Advisor, Security team, Conservation and Contractors is sought and correct material resources is present.
  • Liaise and work with Collections Storage and Access Manager and storage team, contributing to storage planning exercises concerning the move and decant of object between on and offsite stores.
  • Responsible for ensuring agreed standards are maintained for object packing, handling, movement, documentation, storage and display.
  • Liaise and work with Registration regarding the loan in and out of objects, new acquisitions and for corporate loans. Organise collection, delivery and installation of objects around UK on behalf of RMG .
  • Liaise and work with Exhibitions, Curators and Design team providing practical advice regarding the movement of objects and installation, comment on gallery elevations, showcase requirements and contribute to planning for temporary and permanent gallery installations and decants.
  • Assist Collections Management Officer and Collections Information Officer with regular audits of object moves to ensure the locations of objects and data recorded is correct.
  • Undertake site visits and courier trips in the UK and overseas (as required) to inform the planning of NMM loans in and out in conjunction with Registration and for transport and installation of objects.
  • Monitor day to day vehicles maintenance, maintain inventory and oversee condition of work areas, tools and equipment.
  • Source equipment and materials for the AOH team.
  • Deputy RPS for display.
  • Plan and schedule multiple simultaneous workflows for the AOH team, ensuring the teams timetable is appropriate to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ensuring equipment is inspected and fit for purpose
  • Working with the Health and Safety Rep to ensure all relevant legislation and best practices are adhered to.
  • Lead and work with multi-discipline teams to move and install objects.

Terms and Conditions:

Net working hours (i.e. excluding 1 hour per day in rest breaks) will be 36-hours per week. Core hours are Monday to Friday 08.00 to 16.00 with an additional hour to worked in agreement with line management.

Occasionally this role may be required to work outside normal office hours, overtime/time off in lieu will apply.

Salary: £27,000 per annum
