Assistant Director of Music
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Assistant Director of Music. You will be expected to deliver academic music lessons to KS3, GCSE and A Level. The start date for this vacancy is September 2024, although an earlier start date from April or January may be considered for the right candidate.
As Assistant Director, you will have specific responsibility for the academic curriculum ensuring that it is challenging, varied, innovative and, of course, engaging. You will also have the chance to direct ensembles and to initiate other ensembles or groups as appropriate. You will assist in all aspects of musical events including the preparation, presentation, and organisation of any post-event activities.
Every pupil at Lord Wandsworth College has access to a wealth of performing, creating, and listening opportunities. The Music Department aims to enthuse, nurture, and develop a passion for music in whatever format or genre that may take. We offer a range of musical prospects to everyone, allowing pupils to explore their creative talents and abilities in as many ways as possible.
Music is taught to all pupils in Forms 1 – 2, as an option in 3rd Form and at GCSE and A level. Pupils study a wide range of topics in the first three years, including aspects of composition and Music Technology.
There is a strong programme of extra-curricular music, ranging from regular concerts by the scholars to ‘ad-hoc’ performances at lunchtime. There is a wide range of ensembles, as well as larger bands. There is also a strong outreach programme, with many groups performing at local Prep schools and in public concerts throughout Hampshire. Throughout the year, pupils have the chance to participate in a rich variety of Music days.
The Music department is housed in the Music and Drama Centre, a purpose-built block with 2 teaching classrooms, numerous practice rooms, a performance space and a recording area. There is a Mac suite, as well as a range of appropriate software for pupils studying to GCSE and A level. There is a strong tradition of peripatetic music teaching, with many pupils throughout the College taking lessons in a wide range of instruments.
Teaching at LWC requires that members of the academic staff be willing to contribute fully to the life of the College. This includes tutoring, co-curricular involvement, boarding house duties, cover duties and attending parents’ evenings for the year groups taught. Liaison with parents is included in the sphere of the teacher’s responsibilities.
