Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum

Reference: SEP20161868
Expiry date: 2016-10-20 12:00:00.000
Location: South Kensington
Salary: Competitive
Benefits: Competitive remuneration and benefits package provided. Further details can be obtained from Saxton Bampfylde

The V&A is the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance, housing a permanent collection of over 2.3 million objects that span over 5,000 years of human creativity. The Museum holds many of the UK's national collections and houses some of the greatest resources for the study of architecture, furniture, fashion, textiles, photography, sculpture, painting, jewellery, glass, ceramics, book arts, Asian art and design, theatre and performance. The V&A welcomed 3.9 million visitors in the last year and in 2016 was named the Art Fund Museum of the Year.

The Museum’s Trustees are now seeking an exceptional candidate to take on the hugely important and challenging role of Director. A number of high profile plans are in place to expand the Museum’s reach in new ways and to new locations including major projects in South Kensington, Dundee, East London and China. The Director must therefore have the experience and the intellectual leadership to deliver on this breadth and complexity, and continue to develop and articulate a clear vision for the Museum. The Director is a key ambassador for the V&A and should have excellent communication skills, be adept at public speaking and in stakeholder management in a variety of contexts. Candidates should bring a good track record in fundraising and have the creativity and expertise to set the tone and pace of the V&A’s world class public programme. The post-holder will ideally have knowledge of a curatorial area of relevance for the Museum.
