The Astronomy Engagement Department based at the Royal Observatory Greenwich delivers a wide range of activities for schools and the public. The department is looking for an enthusiastic science communicator with strong live presentation skills and a well-rounded knowledge of astronomy and space exploration to support its work on a part-time basis. The postholder will work 2.5 days a week from Thursday to Saturday.
The postholder will be responsible for delivering a wide range of sessions for schools and public audiences. This will primarily focus on planetarium shows and workshop-style activities, although other types of activity may be included. This work can only be carried out on-site in person.
They will also spend some time in the office working on other projects, supporting the development of planetarium shows and workshops for the public and helping to manage related social media and web outputs. Some of their time will be spent supporting other staff in a variety of ways, from helping to set up or pack away equipment to hosting community events at the weekend.
Responsibilities
- Delivery of live planetarium shows and workshops for schools and the public.
- Setting up and packing away furniture, equipment, and materials.
- Updating web content and supporting social media activity.
- Supporting the development of digital planetarium content for live shows.
- Supporting the development of other outputs for families and adults.
- Attending meetings and carrying out personal administration.
- Any other duties reasonably associated with the role.
Requirements
- Excellent live presentation skills.
- Excellent knowledge of astronomy and space exploration.
- A relevant STEM degree OR astronomy related FE qualifications.
- The ability to simplify complex scientific concepts for non-specialist audiences.
- Experience of producing content for social media and the web.
- Enthusiastic about digital technology with an interest in producing multimedia content.
- Well-developed IT skills, including technical problem solving.
- Committed team player capable of independent work.
- Positive, flexible, pro-active, and organised.
Terms and Conditions
Salary: £11,500 which is pro rata of £23,000 per annum
The postholder will work 18 hours per week. Their duties will fall on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. While some flexibility with start and finish times will be required, they will usually work 13.00-17.00 on Thursdays and 09.00-17.00 on Fridays and Saturdays with a 1-hour unpaid lunch break.
Additional opportunities to work overtime in support of a far wider range of activity will also be available subject to approval by your line manager.
