James Fisher runs an active Officer Trainee sponsorship scheme, combining college based studies with time at sea. Successful candidates will obtain an Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency in Engineering (III/1) and a formal qualification to at least AdC Marine Engineering (formally HNC).
Sea time training it would be completed onboard our fleet of Oil/Chemical Tankers trading around the UK, Ireland and North West Europe
To partake in the scheme, you will need to have 5 GCSE’s including Maths, English and Science at grade 4-9 (new) or A-C (old). To join the Deck or Engineering Foundation Degree programme you should possess the GCSE grades indicated above with the addition of a grade 5 (new) or B (old) or higher in Mathematics and a minimum of 48 UCAS points (preferably in Maths/Science related subjects).
The information below provides details of (but not limited to) the duties an Officer Trainee in the Merchant Navy will be expected to train and become proficient in whilst as sea. You should be comfortable working away from home for extended periods of time.
The minimum age for applicants is 16 years however, successful candidates must be 18 years or older to commence the sea phases of the training programme, course and progression plans can be discussed at interview.
Successful applicants must achieve an unrestricted ENG1 Medical certificate (valid for 2 years for over 18's) prior to sponsorship being confirmed, further information would be provided in due course. Applicants with any underlying medical condition that may prevent this being achieved, must highlight this during the application process.
