Do you want to study for a degree in transport planning whilst being paid and gaining a breadth of work experience shaping Greater Manchester’s future transport system? Are you enthusiastic, curious and self-motivated?  Do you have an interest in how cities work and the role transport can play in helping people and places to thrive?

Greater Manchester is evolving rapidly and embarking on an exciting period of change with a growing population and economy.  Transport is central to connecting people to opportunities, and we are on the cusp of a range of revolutionary changes to how we all get around. It’s more important than ever that we deliver transport networks that encourage sustainable and active travel (walking, cycling and public transport) and to reduce the numbers of private cars on the roads to tackle carbon emissions, improve air quality, improve road safety and help people to be more active. Would you be excited to be able to shape the future of travel in Greater Manchester?

At Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) we design, operate, and maintain one of the largest public transport networks outside of London. Ensuring that millions of journeys are made safely and sustainably every single day, requires careful planning. TfGM’s transport planners are responsible for planning improvements to our transport system to ensure that people across Greater Manchester can make seamless, sustainable journeys to access jobs, education and leisure activities.

As an apprentice within TfGM’s Transport Strategy department, you’ll be involved in shaping a range of exciting future transport projects working across a number of different teams (undertaking work in strategy and scheme development, research, innovation, modelling and business case development).  And at the same time you will complete a BSc Degree in Transport Planning at Aston University over a five-year programme via a blend of both online and on campus learning.

To allow entry to the Transport Planning degree apprenticeship you will have the following qualifications:

  • Three A Levels (or equivalent) grade A*- C– Maths, Geography or Economics would be advantageous
  • At least Grade 5 or C GCSE Maths and English

You will be keen and enthusiastic with a willingness to learn and the ability to engage with people at all levels and work effectively within a team.  You will also be highly motivated, reliable and proactive with the ability to manage your responsibilities for both work and study.

In line with the apprenticeship guidelines, to be eligible for this apprenticeship any previous qualifications or experience you have cannot be similar or the same to the qualification you would achieve from this apprenticeship.  It is anticipated that you will enrol onto the degree apprenticeship starting September 2021.

If you are exciting by this amazing opportunity and have the skills we are seeking, we would really like to hear from you!

In return, as well as a competitive salary, we also offer a range of fantastic benefits, such as:

  • Free Rail or Metrolink travel to and from work within the Greater Manchester boundary
  • Free bus travel within Greater Manchester
  • 27 days holiday per annum
  • Access to the local government pension scheme

At Transport for Greater Manchester we encourage candidates to discuss flexible working options at any stage of the recruitment process.

We welcome and encourage applications from everyone regardless of age, disability, gender, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation. We are actively building a diverse workforce and want to create an inclusive environment as we recognise the importance of our workforce reflecting the communities we serve.
