Post: Behaviour & Learning Support Mentor

Responsible to: Assistant Principal – Behaviour Lead

Grade: 3

Hours: 35 hours x 39 weeks

 

DUTIES

To become a member of the Behaviour and Emotional Support Team (B.E.S.T.). To help manage and improve the behaviour and progress of students within the academy. To support students in lessons and to mentor targeted students in an attempt to improve their behaviour, progress and relationships with others.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To liaise with Assistant Principal Pastoral and Assistant Principal Behaviour in identifying students to work with through mentoring, small planned group activities and in class support.

To help students who are under-performing in their subjects, either on a one-to-one basis outside the classroom or within lessons.

To implement strategies and support students in self-esteem and confidence-building activities.

To listen to students and help them resolve a range of issues that are creating barriers to their learning.

To draw up agreed action plans with students, outlining the aims of the mentoring, and monitoring their progress.

To maintain accurate records and prepare written reports and evaluations.

To monitor attendance and punctuality of targeted students.

To attend pastoral meetings as and when necessary.

To liaise with staff re students who are not demonstrating the learning attitudes expected at MCA.

To manage students’ behaviour whilst in the Seclusion Room or the BEST Area and at break and lunch times in the BEST Area.

To liaise with relevant professionals and individuals, e.g. educational psychologists, the police and social services.

To set up and run breakfast and after-school clubs as well as running extracurricular activities, such as homework clubs, reading clubs, during lunchtimes or as out-of-school activities.

To organise drop-in 'offload' sessions, where students can discuss particular issues.

To help to secure funding to support students' additional educational needs.

To manage your own professional development through undertaking relevant training and sharing best practice with other staff.

To collect witness statements as and when necessary.

To support the SEND Team during transition for pupils with BESD needs.

To use restorative justice practices to break down barriers between staff and students and students and students.
