Gain experience and qualifications simultaneously on our Officer Trainee sponsorship programme. 

James Fisher runs an active Officer Trainee sponsorship scheme, combining college based studies with time at sea. Successful candidates will obtain an Officer of the Watch certificate of competency in Deck (II/1 OOWD) or Engineering (III/1) and a formal qualification to at least HNC level. 

Sea time training it would be completed onboard our fleet of Oil/Chemical Tankers trading around the UK, Ireland and North West Europe

To partake in the scheme, you will need to have 5 GCSE’s including Maths, English and Science at grade 4-9 (new) or A-C (old). To join the Deck or Engineering Foundation Degree programme you should possess the GCSE grades indicated above with the addition of a grade 5 (new) or B (old) or higher in Mathematics and a minimum of 48 UCAS points (preferably in a relevant field of study).

The information below provides details of (but not limited to) the duties an Officer Trainee in the Merchant Navy will be expected to train and become proficient in whilst as sea.

Maintenance (Deck)

·         Carry out Maintenance of Vessel Mechanical Machinery and Systems

Bridge Watchkeeping and Navigation (Deck)

or

Engine Room Watchkeeping (Engineering)

·         Contribute to maintaining a navigational watch
·         Maintain a navigational watch
·         Initiate the response to navigation emergencies

·         Take charge of an Engine Room Watch

Ship Operations (Deck)

·         Contribute to vessel operations
·         Contribute to the stability and watertight integrity of a vessel
·         Monitor and control vessel operations

Mooring, Anchoring and Securing (Deck)

·         Contribute to vessel mooring, anchoring and securing operations
·         Control vessel mooring, anchoring and securing operations

Operational Management

         Maintain personal, health, safety and environmental standards on board a vessel
         Maintain safe, legal and effective working practices on board a vessel
         Create, maintain and enhance productive working relationships on-board a vessel

Operate Machinery (Engineering)

·         Prepare and Operate Vessel Propulsion Machinery and Ancillary Systems
·         Operate Vessel Auxiliaries and Service Machinery
·         Operate and Adjust Vessel Electrical Equipment
