Assistant Curator of Art

Reference: MAR20231813
Expiry date: 2023-04-16 22:59:00.000
Location: Greenwich
Salary: £25,000 Per Annum
Benefits: Pension, 22 days annual leave, training and development, and flexible working, etc

Situated within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our new strategy ‘Charting Our Course’ puts our people at the core of its success.

The Assistant Curator of Art supports colleagues in building access to and engagement with one of the most significant art collections in Britain, which includes works by major artists across a range of media (oil paintings, prints and drawings, sculpture and miniatures), a large number of British portraits and some of the finest Dutch and Flemish seascapes outside the Netherlands. These holdings are further boosted and contextualised by an extensive decorative art collection, encompassing ceramics, glassware, plate, jewellery, furniture, dress and textiles.

We are looking for someone who wants to create stories which engage everyone who comes to our unique sites. A particular focus for this role is the responsibility for certain aspects of the fine art and especially the decorative arts collections. You don’t need to have come from a museum or heritage background but will be motivated to learn about our work, to act as an ambassador for the Museum and to bring new perspectives to our visitors.

Key elements of your role will include carrying out research, working with colleagues and stakeholders to make acquisitions, contributing to RMG’s creative programme and digitising and cataloguing aspects of the collections.

You will need to demonstrate an interest in art and art history as well as an ability to bring related ideas and issues to life, making them relevant and accessible through research, exhibitions and displays, publications and social media. This role is an excellent opportunity for you to build your curatorial skills and knowledge.

You will work flexibly and proactively with teams across the Museum while maintaining relationships with relevant partners, developing your role as your knowledge of the collections deepens and you engage more widely with our audiences.

Core hours of work will be 36 per week, 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with your line manager.

In return we offer a culture which actively promotes inclusion and diversity, pension, 22 days annual leave (rising to 25 after 1 year), training and development, an environment with flexible working options as well as many more.

Salary: £25,000 per annum

If you are an excellent communicator, passionate about people and their stories and keen to develop a career in the sector, we would like to hear from you.
