We now have an exciting opportunity for someone to join our team as a Head of Legal who will be a trusted and key advisor to the Integrity & Compliance Director, the Integrity & Compliance Department and colleagues in other departments; deliver first hand, first class legal affairs support on all legal matters affecting the business.

The role of a Head of Legal is all about:

  • Lead commercial contractual negotiation, support the Commercial Partnerships team and our commercial revenue growth with sponsors, and partners, including drafting and negotiating long term agreements and support documentation.
  • Deliver timely and high quality legal advice to the business all in a practical and commercially focussed way. Reduce risk, resolve issues and maximise the opportunity for the business to deliver on its purpose.
  • Manage British Cycling’s intellectual property rights and trademarks and protect against infringement. Support with IP specific matters in relation to commercial revenue growth, non-disclosure agreements, joint development agreements, and licences.
  • In conjunction with the Integrity & Compliance Director and COO, ensure the provision of excellent drafting, negotiating and management of supplier contracts and procurement of services.
  • Support the Integrity & Compliance Director in providing legal advice to the GB Cycling Team.
  • With the legal department, provide legal guidance and support to the Ethics and Compliance team with regard to Safeguarding, Anti-Doping and Cycle Sport Disciplinary cases, identify and support the implementation of changes to ensure that cycling operates in a safe, clean, accessible and supportive environment.
  • Oversee the Legal Manager’s legal support on any legal issues that arise as a result of claims against the British Cycling insurance policy. Manage interactions with third party stakeholders and managing the case through to successful closure.

You’ll come up with ideas to drive the Integrity & Compliance team forward and work cross functionally with our Regional teams and support network at the National Cycling Centre to promote these activities and events.  In return for delivering consistent results, you’ll receive the opportunity to learn and develop, as well as exciting opportunities to broaden your role and grow within the organisation. 

The key skills, knowledge and experience we are looking for are: 

  • Degree educated, qualified solicitor with a reasonable level of PQE. Training contract completed at a leading national law firm.
  • Highly competent technical and commercial lawyer, with broad post-qualification experience including commercial and corporate law.
  • Experience of drafting and negotiating complex legal agreements intellectual property elements.
  • Knowledge of civil litigation system, procurement processes & EU competition law.
  • An understanding of the principles of anti-doping and/or sport disciplinary matters.
  • Knowledge of WADA Code, UKAD rules and UCI rules is desirable but not essential
  • Experience of sports law, working in a sporting, NGB, not for profit industry is desirable but not essential
  • Able to demonstrate a track record in providing pragmatic legal advice and guidance in a commercial environment
  • Solid operational professional with a developing strategic mind-set who has the ability to partner with key stakeholders in the business, while driving the business forward
  • Influential presentation and communication skills with ability to interact across all levels of management
  • Proven experience working in a complex, commercial organisation that requires detail orientation, sound judgment and strong analytical skills.

This is a profession which is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check will be required.
