At the RSPB we are dedicated to reaching audiences that are currently underrepresented in our organisation. Therefore, we are looking for a dedicated, inspiring individual to develop and lead an innovative year-long traineeship programme. Your role will be to connect with local communities and organisations and provide opportunities for the recruitment of four young people, from a range of diverse backgrounds, into the traineeship programme, enabling them to develop the skills and experience needed to pursue a long-term career in nature conservation. You will be part of their recruitment and support their development, while working on a potential retention plan as part of a wider programme of delivering work-based learning/personal development across the Greater Thames Estuary Priority Landscape.

An inspiring communicator and leader, you’ll have a good understanding of the barriers facing young people from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds entering occupations in which they are currently underrepresented and be motivated to see greater ethnic diversity in the nature conservation sector.

You don’t need to be an expert in conservation to succeed in this role as you’ll work collaboratively with staff and volunteers from across the RSPB and our project partners to ensure a rich, productive learning environment for the trainees. What is essential is the ability to connect with and inspire young people, to be creative and resourceful in your approach to learning and have bags of enthusiasm!

In this role you will:

  • Develop and deliver a year-long training programme for four trainees that will incorporate ecology, reserve management, project management, people engagement & surveying skills along with connecting them to the wider organisation.
  • Recruit and induct four conservation trainees.
  • Manage the traineeship budget and procure the necessary equipment and resources for the trainees.
  • Work with the trainees throughout the programme ensuring that they end their placement in a stronger, more confident place to continue their career with the RSPB or with an external organisation.
  • Ensure that the trainees can undertake activities safely and with proper supervision from experienced members of staff.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with internal stakeholders so that people all around the RSPB understand the value to the organisation of trainee opportunities and entry level roles.
  • Support and feed-into the work of the Training Scheme Development Manager to develop and embed progressive schemes of recruitment, employment and skills development.
  • Support development of expertise provided to the business, monitoring external developments identifying risks and opportunities in order to facilitate continuous improvement in delivery of the RSPB’s strategy.
  • Engage with external stakeholders and manage joint learning opportunities

Essential knowledge, skills and experience:

  • Energy, enthusiasm and resourcefulness.
  • Experience of working with and supporting others in their personal and professional development.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to work with both internal and external stakeholders effectively and incorporate joint learning opportunities
  • Strong planning, organising and prioritising skills and the ability to plan or schedule your own workdays, and to respond to changing pressures or requirements.
  • Effective problem-solver with an ability to manage change well
  • Experience of and ability to understand and interpret the requirements of your colleagues and the people that you manage.
  • An understanding of health & safety and safeguarding requirements, policies and procedures relative to the role, and the quality, outputs and standards required.
  • Technical knowledge and experience in planning and delivering professional development.
  • Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role, or a professional accreditation with relevant formal training.
  • Experience in connecting with, and inspiring young people, to be creative and resourceful in their approach to learning

Desirable knowledge, skills and experience

  • Experience of developing and delivering a programme of learning and/ or professional development.
  • Experience of developing innovative solutions and contributing to strategic planning.
  • Experience in budget management
  • Experience of working in the Greater Thames area with and a knowledge of youth provision including open access youth clubs, youth programmes and projects particularly those working with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups.
  • Knowledge of the barriers facing young people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds entering occupations in which they are currently underrepresented
